SAMPLE WORKSHOPS

Connecting Strategies and Models

  • We will:

    • review concepts in the upcoming upcoming unit

    • explore ways for students to connect the models to numeric strategies to build understanding and develop fluency

    • identify common misconceptions and how to proactively address them

Building Thinking Classroom
Collaborative Thinking Tasks

  • “Building Thinking Classroom” is a rapidly growing educational approach developed by Dr. Peter Liljedahl where students are actively engaged in thinking, reasoning, and problem solving through collaboration.

  • We will:

    • explore the components of “Building Thinking Classroom”

    • learn how to execute thinking tasks and review teacher moves to promote thinking

    • plan tasks and lessons to introduce, practice, and deepen understanding of concepts

Discussion Based Fluency Warm Ups

  • We will:

    • engage in multiple types of fluency warm-ups that build reasoning skills and promote rich mathematical discourse

    • review routines and instructional techniques to get students thinking and talking

    • Sample warm-ups

Solving Word Problems

  • We will:

    • review best practices for making sense of and solving word problems

    • compare different types of word problem structures

    • explore activities that further support students in understanding word problems

Counting Collections (K - 5 only)

  • We will:

    • discover the value of Counting Collections, a student centered activity that supports making sense of numbers and quantity, and learn how to plan, prepare, introduce, and execute the routine

    • explore different tasks and extensions to advance mathematical thinking

    • learn how to collect and analyze data to differentiate the routine for students at different levels
